Description
Looking towards the Cliffs and the Ness( the Ness has various spellings, the 'Naze' is also used as from certain angles it does look like a face in profile with a nose). At the bottom of the cliffs there used to be a small natural paddling/swimming pool. The grassed area is the main area of the Vicky/Vickie Park. we used to play football/soccer there even in the Winter and rain. You dinna feel the cauld when you're young. You'd come home soaking wet and covered in mud. I had to undress before I was allowed back into the house.
The trees at the bottom were/are part of Springie (Springfield) Park. There used to be an old fashioned Bandstand there, but this has since been demolished.
It's a nice walk along the Cliffs. You can get to Auchmithie and even Lunan Bay.
The farmland is still in use (Windyhills Farm), but a lot of the land has now given over to Poly Tunnels for Strawberries and Raspberries. Windyhills is owned by the Stirling Family. The story goes round that Stirling made about 25milion last year from his fruit alone. They also own a food processing and packaging plant at the other end of town.
As kids we used to go to the berries in the Summer and the Tatties in the 'Tattie Holidays'.
Nowadays, a lot of the workers on the berries in the Poly tunnels are East Europeans who live on site in caravans and mobile homes. Mostly they are migratory, coming back every year in the Spring till late September, depending on the weather. Some are settling down in the town and raising families, which is nice to see.
