I just signed a petition about this, this morning David and I am sorry, but I don't agree the the other commenter. I have heard about numbers of certain animals being controlled by killing off the old and the sick amongst them, but it is different when it comes to an animal that is endangered, as far as I am concerned the only reason for this is so that some sick minded person can say, "I killed a rhino" There is even the possibility that if the US Fish and Wildlife Service issues them a permit they could have the poor thing on display in their home. Plus if they only kill off the old and sick then why do those hunting lions only tend to go after the really big males. Simple, it makes a "better" trophy for them to put on display so that they can brag about it. I would also like to know why when lions have gone extinct in so many countries they are only classed as vulnerable rather than endangered. It is the same with wolves far from taking out the old and sick they go after the alphas. If they take out the alpha males it leaves the pack vulnerable and if you take out the alpha females you could leave pups without a mother as only the alpha females breed. The danger of killing of the biggest animals of any breed is that you weaken the gene pool which is why even elephants are no longer quite as big as they used to be
