Description

A WW1 Standard tanker built for the Shipping Controller by A Stephen and Sons Ltd., Linthouse, Glasgow. She was launched as War Hunter during September 1918 and completed during November. Her management was allocated to Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co., London. She had cylindrical tanks fitted to her cargo holds to enable her to carry fluids.
In 1919 she was acquired by Lloyds Royal Belge S.A., Antwerp and converted to a dry cargo ship and then renamed her Trevier.
She was sold to Cie Africaine de Nav S.A., Antwerp and renamed Kasango as shown in this photograph.
On 26 February 1941 she was sailing as part of Convoy OB-290 on passage Liverpool-Freetown-Matadi with a general cargo including ammunition and under the command of Master Emile Mathieu.
Early in the morning of 26th U-47 attacked the convoy and sank three ships and damaged a fourth. Kasango was one of the ships to be sunk and she went down with the loss of 6 crew members. Forty survivors were picked up by HMS Campanula and landed at Gourock.
U-47 was never heard of again after 7 March 1941 and all 45 crew members were lost.
